Blockchain Gaming: Disappointment Despite High Funding

As we all know, gaming is an important part of Web3. However, some people from the industry would argue that despite massive fundraising, many blockchain-based games fail to deliver enjoyable gameplay. Kori Leon, co-founder of Pixelverse, a gaming ecosystem on the TON blockchain, shares this view. He believes that many Web3 gaming projects have not lived up to their promises. 

Leon explains that even with significant backing and funding, these projects struggle to attract players. This issue has led to disappointment among users and investors. 

Pixelverse’s Different Approach 

Pixelverse is changing their approach to Web3 gaming. In June, they managed to attract 50 million players to their Telegram mini-game, Pixeltap. According to Leon, they aim to build a strong user base without giving “unrealistic promises.” 

Leon also mentioned that Pixelverse is planning to release new infrastructure and games that will offer a more AAA experience. However, he highlighted that the groundwork for distribution and community building is already in place. Leon believes this positions Pixelverse for “endless possibilities.” 

The Critical Role of Gaming in Web3 

Randy Wasinger, founder and CEO of CryptoSlam, agrees with the importance of gaming in Web3. He stated that gaming remains a key way to attract new users to Web3. 

Wasinger also pointed out that a significant amount of capital has been invested in Web3 games. However, he believes the best games “require long software development cycles.” He hopes that gaming-dedicated blockchains like Immutable, Ronin, and Mythos will eventually produce a “killer game.” 

Challenges and Opportunities 

Despite the challenges, Wasinger is optimistic. He believes that from one or more of these major protocols, we will see game-changing titles that appeal to the masses and bring new people into Web3. But, he acknowledges, it takes time.
